Your Bike Repair Expert
Christopher "Stick" Gefvert, (he/they) is Howl Adventure Center's bike overlord, and all-around bike-centric wizard. He was born and raised close to the southern cheddar curtain in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. He was always taking apart his toys. His first bike had green tires. Later on, he learned about taps, dies, and threads when trying to upgrade his BMX bicycle's cranks— and also the bonus lesson that even though something is new out of a box, it doesn't mean it will all work. (Thanks Uncle Dale.)
Flash forward to moving to Madison, WI at age 18 and rediscovering how fun the bike can be. Being a drummer in a punk/metal band is a highlight of this time. Then, Stick got bike fever so bad that in 2003, he helped found and run "FreeWheel", a community DIY non-profit bike repair center. In April, 2004, he attended and completed United Bicycle Institute's basic repair course. Also, he got a job at Budget Bicycle Center, and had the same bench there for 10 years.
Luckily also, he was befriended by the then frame builders warehouse crew, and got a key literally and figuratively to learn the craft of steel frame repair, modification, and scratch builds. All the while going camping and bicycle touring, around Wisconsin, on the West Coast, and even cross country from Madison to New Orleans. (https://doitrealbig.tumblr.
In 2015 the Big Lake pulled hard enough that Stick came up to live in a field at North Wind Organic Farm, and work at the then, Bayfield Bike Route. Eventually buying 40 acres down the road from that field, two years later, his friend of 10+ years came for a visit, and they decided that they were a match and should live happily ever after. They went on a tandem tour and 9 months later, after furiously building some shelter, Link Red Wolf was born on that 40 acres.
Stick spends his time being a papa, skateboarding, helping plants grow, riding one of his various hand built frames to and from the bike shop, gathering foods in season, learning woodworking, swimming in the lake, and slowly building another frame, a hardtail 29er from a pile of tubes. He is starting to build a house now too!
Stick has 20 years formal experience fixing bicycles and is DT Swiss Advanced Wheel Builder Certified.
