Howl recommends the Light Ski and Pro Ski for an alpine ski boot sock. A medium weight also works depending on how tight the boots are, but with ski boots--and any boots for that matter--packing the inside of the boot with sock does not allow warm air to travel between the ankle and the toes, so too tight is not warm! A light ski sock worn alone, gives the best performance and the best warmth, in our opinion. And it is below zero for entire ski days here in the Lake Superior Country, so we do have some experience. Leaving room for stick-on heat packs is another bonus of light socks. Here is what Fits says about them: The Pro Ski is made for the skier who prefers a padded shin and a more secure heel. The cushioning in the heel helps by adding some padding/comfort while reducing the risk of “heel lift” — if your boots have “packed out” in the heel and some volume is needed, these are the socks for you. Engineered using FITS’s Full Contact Fit®. Dynamic Toe Cup® contours to the shape of your foot. Heel Lock® provides heel security that limits the chances of a blister when combined with a properly fit boot. Over-the-calf length falls just below the knee. Super-fine Merino Wool 57% Nylon 32% Polyester 8% Lycra 3%

This is the sock we wear for Nordic skiing here at Howl. It is the same as the Light Hiker Crew only with different labeling. A Medium Hiker Crew works also, as long as your boots are not too tight. As with Alpine ski socks, squishing a thick sock into a performance fitting boot only makes for cold feet. With cross-country skiing, your body generates a lot of heat, so you can ski down to very cold temps without a lot of extra insulation. For people with cold feet and poor circulation, we have outer boots that go on the outside of the ski boots to add insulation and they can be seen below. Then they boot fits properly and it is not sloppy, making you unbalanced. Here is what Fits says about their nordic socks: FITS® Light Nordic Crew offers lightweight cushioning in the toe, heel, and footbed. The crew-height construction is perfect for Nordic boots. The super-fine Merino wool makes for ultimate temperature regulation and moisture management while you’re out on the slopes. Dynamic Toe Cup® contours to the shape of your foot. Heel Lock® provides heel security that limits the chances of a blister when combined with a properly fit boot. Super-fine merino wool construction. Crew height rises just below the calf. This is Howl's premiere very cold weather sock. It is thick, durable, holds it shape, doesn't pull off your feet, and is the proper amount of wool to be warm and dry. It is probably too thick to go inside hiking boots or ski boots, and is really meant for winter boots only, and as cozy slippers. Here is what Fits says about them: The ultimate combination: Merino wool for cold weather insulation and the performance that comes from a perfect fit. There is no other heavyweight sock that can make this claim. If there were, we would have made it! This sock is loaded with 100% Merino wool on the inside against your foot, so all you feel is comfortable and dry. Heavyweight full-foot cushioning for warmth and protection. Durable nylon exterior for extended wear. Mid-calf height works well with hunting boots. Merino Wool 82% Nylon 13% Polyester 3% Lycra® Spandex 2%
